What a Certificate of Analysis is
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a batch-linked laboratory document that summarizes analytical results for a specific lot of material. In research procurement, the COA is the primary record that connects a physical vial or container to measured identity and purity data.
COAs vary by laboratory and method scope. A useful COA for research materials typically identifies the material, the unique lot or batch number, the test methods used, the results obtained, and the date of analysis or release. It should be treated as documentation for laboratory quality systems — not as a marketing claim or clinical endorsement.
Summary COAs and fuller analytical reports are related: a summary may list lot identifiers, named methods, and key results, while a full report may attach chromatograms, spectra, or narrative. Your institutional SOP should define which level is required before release into inventory.

When evaluating a COA, laboratories often look for consistency between the label, the purchase record, and the analytical report. Missing lot linkage or ambiguous method descriptions reduce the document’s usefulness for audit trails.

Catalog specifications versus lot results
Storefront or catalog text may describe a target purity or documentation posture for planning. That language is not a measured Certificate of Analysis for a physical lot.

What to archive with the lot
A durable lot file usually includes the supplier COA (or Vault URL), receiving notes, storage assignment, and any in-house retest summaries your SOP requires. Keep the original supplier PDF; do not replace it with an educational schematic from this site.
