What a Certificate of Analysis is

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a batch-linked laboratory document that summarizes analytical results for a specific lot of material. In research procurement, the COA is the primary record that connects a physical vial or container to measured identity and purity data.

COAs vary by laboratory and method scope. A useful COA for research materials typically identifies the material, the unique lot or batch number, the test methods used, the results obtained, and the date of analysis or release. It should be treated as documentation for laboratory quality systems — not as a marketing claim or clinical endorsement.

Core fields researchers commonly review

When evaluating a COA, laboratories often look for consistency between the label, the purchase record, and the analytical report. Missing lot linkage or ambiguous method descriptions reduce the document’s usefulness for audit trails.

  • Material name and form as stated on the container
  • Unique lot or batch identifier
  • Identity method (for example, mass spectrometry) and result language
  • Purity method (for example, HPLC) and reported purity for that lot
  • Analysis or release date
  • Testing laboratory identification when provided

Purity versus identity

Identity testing answers whether the observed analytical signature is consistent with the expected compound. Purity testing estimates how much of the measured signal is attributable to the primary analyte under the chosen chromatographic conditions.

These are related but not identical questions. A lot can show strong identity evidence while still requiring careful review of impurity profiles, or conversely present a high chromatographic purity figure that still needs identity confirmation. Research programs should document both dimensions when their SOPs require it.

Why lot numbers matter

Lot numbers allow laboratories to trace results, storage conditions, and experimental series back to a specific manufacturing or release batch. Without lot linkage, a COA cannot serve as a reliable quality record for that container.

  • Confirm identity and purity methods are named, not merely asserted
  • Record storage location and receipt condition in the lab notebook or LIMS
  • Archive the COA with the experiment series that will consume the lot
  • Escalate discrepancies to procurement before use in critical assays

What a COA does not establish

A COA does not authorize human or veterinary use, establish clinical safety, or certify that a material is suitable for any particular assay design. Method suitability remains the responsibility of the receiving laboratory.
