LC-MS Identity Testing Explained for Research Materials

What LC-MS is used to answer
Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) couples chromatographic separation with mass analysis. In research-material release documentation, LC-MS (or MS alone) is commonly used to support identity: whether the observed mass-to-charge evidence is consistent with the expected compound under the stated method.
Identity and purity remain different questions. HPLC purity estimates relative chromatographic abundance; MS-based identity evidence addresses whether the primary analyte matches the expected molecular signature.
What researchers typically see on a COA
Certificate language varies by laboratory. Useful identity sections usually name the technique (for example, LC-MS or ESI-MS), state the observed result in method-appropriate terms, and connect the result to a specific lot number and analysis date.
- Technique named (LC-MS, MS, ESI-MS, etc.)
- Lot number matching the container
- Result language tied to the expected compound
- Analysis or release date
- Method identifier when the lab provides one
Reading identity results without overclaiming
A certificate that says identity was confirmed by MS is a documentation claim about that lot under that method—not a universal proof independent of conditions, and not a statement about biological activity or suitability for any particular assay.
When mass accuracy, adducts, or fragmentation details are omitted, the report is harder to reinterpret later. Laboratories that need deeper characterization should plan orthogonal or in-house confirmation according to their SOPs.
Pairing LC-MS with HPLC
Many research procurement checklists ask for both purity (often HPLC) and identity (often MS). Together they reduce the chance of accepting a lot that looks clean chromatographically but lacks identity evidence—or the reverse.

Practical procurement questions
Before releasing a material into a critical workflow, documentation owners often ask a short set of questions. These are quality-system questions, not clinical ones.
- Is identity method named and lot-linked?
- Does the vial lot match the certificate?
- Is HPLC (or another purity method) also documented when required by your SOP?
- Where will the certificate be archived with the experiment series?
