How to Read an Analytical Report for Research Materials
A practical field-by-field checklist for reviewing laboratory analytical reports and Certificates of Analysis—lot linkage, methods, results, and common gaps—without human-use guidance.

Start with identifiers
Before interpreting percentages or spectra, confirm that the report belongs to the container in hand. Lot numbers, material names, and dates should align across the vial label, purchase record, and analytical document.
If identifiers disagree, pause release into a critical series and escalate to procurement. Do not invent missing fields.
- Lot number matches the vial
- Material name matches the purchase SKU
- Report date is present and plausible for the receipt window
Read methods before numbers
A purity percentage or identity statement is only as useful as the named method behind it. Look for technique language (for example HPLC or mass spectrometry) and any stated method conditions your institution expects to archive.
Catalog “target purity” language on a storefront is not a substitute for a lot-linked measured result on a certificate.
Identity and purity fields
Treat identity and purity as separate questions. Identity evidence asks whether observations are consistent with the expected compound; purity asks how the primary analyte is quantified under a named method’s rules.
A report that answers only one of those questions may still be useful—but your SOP should say whether both are required before release.
Documentation red flags
Escalate when a certificate is missing, lot linkage is absent, methods are unnamed, or the supplier cannot produce a file that matches the vial. Placeholder or demo certificates are not research documentation.
- No lot number on the report
- Unnamed analytical method
- Results that cannot be archived with the experiment series
- Marketing claims substituting for laboratory data
Archive with the experiment series
Strong laboratory practice stores the analytical report (or Vault link) with the notebook or LIMS entry for that series. Batch verification tools help open the correct record; institutional SOPs still govern retention.
